7 Indianapolis Cafes Perfect for Remote Working

I’m all about an ambiance when it comes to working remote. As an entrepreneur, you quickly learn to make any place your office. Coworking spaces are picking up steam as a great place to work when you don’t have a corporate office, but for many they can be cost prohibitive. Coffee shops have held down work nomads for decades, but sometimes you need a full service deal - cocktails, music, hot food. The full package. All of those late nights editing photos have motivated me to think outside the box, beyond your normal internet cafe (just kidding, do those even exist anymore). At any rate, I’ve found a few amazing places in Indianapolis that offer all of the above. As a self proclaimed foodie and drink enthusiast - my standards are set pretty high. Check out my scorecard, and read about seven cafes where you can knock out a draft proposal AND catch a vibe at the same time. All of the cafes on this list have a friendly environment and welcoming staff that won’t mind you working for a bit. So, grab a seat and tip your waiters well.

1.Napolese

Score: 4

At risk of being called a fangirl of the Patachou Inc. brand, I have to say they just don’t disappoint when it comes to setting the scene and bringing some quality food. Napolese is an artisanal pizzeria that artfully blends fine food and a carefully sourced drink menu. While pizza is the featured item (for good reason, its delicious), I’m obsessed with their salads and Brussel Sprout Hash. Solid coffee program, so you can choose between libations or caffeine. The wine selections are unique - which I really appreciate. Their manager, Francesco, shared a wealth of knowledge during my last visit with Tanisha. He can give you a lesson in wine history, if you so please. A strong WiFi connection and a soulful playlist round this spot out with a 4 out of 4.

2.Cornerstone Coffee

Score: 3.5

A new-to-me spot, in the SoBro area of Indianapolis. Cornerstorne is a coffee shop and evening bar, located inside of Moe & Johnny’s. They feature a self-serve drip coffee bar, with fancy espresso drinks as well. Lot’s of pastry and food options. What I love about this place is the moody lighting and relaxing environment. One could easily transition from late lunch to early dinner hours, catching up on emails. Or, pop in for a late night meeting after the 9 to 5. I promise, you’ll wonder why you’ve never been there! The late night hours give them major brownie points in my eye. Only a small deduction for limited parking. 3.5 out of 4.

3.Taste of Havana

Score: 3

Cuban coffee has a special place in my heart. Oh, the many cups of cafe con leche that I’ve had in Miami…it’s just different from your regular latte. Taste of Havana is nestled in the heart of Broad Ripple. If you’ve ever been there, especially in their early days, you’ve been greeted by the owner and his daughter. Their stories and banter are hilarious and make you feel at home. But lets get to the food. Real cuban food. And it’s amazing. Grab a pastelito (flaky pastries with a sweet or savory filling), a drink and setup shop.

I have a confession. Taste of Havana is the only place on this list that does not have WiFi. But I included them anyway. In fact, they have signage all over the walls instructing you to put down your cell phone, close the laptops and enjoy the moment. Or your company. So while this space may not be the perfect destination for a video conference, I’ve met many clients here for consultations or for networking. Productivity doesn’t always have to include tech. Take a minute to pull out your planner, jot down some notes and sip on a cortadito. Still, we must assess a 1 point deduction for their internet aversion. That brings us down to a 3 out of 4.

4.Petite Chou

Score: 4

Damn, Tina. Back at it again with the Patachou brand…sorry not sorry. I’ll keep this one short and sweet. Parisian decor. A heated patio in the winter, so that you don’t have to suffer from seasonal affective disorder. A jammin playlist. Sprawling cocktail menu, and yummy coffee and food. Just go, and bring your laptop. Thank me later. And checkout their website here.

5.The Cake Bake Shop

Score: 4

The Cake Bake Shop is pretty well known around these parts as a fancifully decorated, European cafe - fit for a princess. It’s major eye candy, and often filled to the brim with googley eyed guests that are in awe of their desserts, teas and pretty drinks. I live for their lavender latte, croissants or quiche of the day. Now, due to the crowds, I wouldn’t typically put them at the top of my list for a place to get work done. But it’s all about finding the sweet spot (no pun intended). Stop by midweek around 10am, well before the after work crowd arrives and grab a spot on the patio. Now you’ve got yourself a Parisian getaway. They’re in Broad Ripple, with a new location coming to Carmel soon (can’t wait).

6.Milktooth

Score: 3.5

This spot has become a shining star in Indy, as one of the trendiest places to brunch! Milktooth is all about world inspired fare. Think super unique, crafted dishes packed with flavor and locally grown food. Pastries and coffee are served 7-9am, followed by a full menu from 9am-3pm. Expect a packed house on the weekends - but during the week, its much more chill! I’ve hopped in around the lunch hour and knocked out some tasks. Booze may or may not have been consumed. My only complaint for Milktooth are the hours. Closing up shop at 3pm totally makes sense for their business, but I would love if they could extend into later hours. Pretty please? Alas, a half point deduction.

7.HoiTea ToiTea

Score: 4

Hoitea Toitea is a bit newer to the scene for Indianapolis, but quickly expanding with locations in Broad Ripple and The Fashion Mall. I actually hosted our Fleur Noire launch party there, for the arrival of the Drea & Co. Home line! During which, the staff was impeccable - serving delicious tea infused champagne cocktails and macarons to our guests. With that said, I’ve been able to come in during the week and I just love the atmosphere. The space invites productivity, and I always end up meeting cool new people whether students or entrepreneurs like myself. If you’re looking for more relaxed seating, they’ve got comfy sofas as well. Amazing teas, coffee and a full breakfast and lunch menu give this cafe a 4 out of 4!

That’s my list! I’m seeing a big shift in the restaurant industry, where many are moving from the formal dine and dash atmosphere, to one of a linger and mingle. I’m a big fan of the latter. Let me know your thoughts! Did I miss anything? Comment below.
