Behind the Video with Hollywood Mal

Hey ya'll. I had the privilege of stepping on set for a behind the scenes shoot during the filming of Hollywood Mal's new video, #FOBN, Directed by Brian Millbrook. The outcome was incredible. There's lots in the works and I got a chance to talk with Mal about it all. Click through some of my favorite shots from the day and listen to the track below.

Tell us about your video concept for Fantasies of a Broke Ni*** (#FOBN)? How did you come up with it? How did you find your videographer, etc?

Myself and the director Brian (Brian Millbrook for Eye Dream, LLC) have been familiar with each other for some time now. He's one of the dopest individuals I've witnessed with a camera and I'm a fan of his work, so I had to make that connection happen. We chopped it up over dinner, I told him my vision and ideas, and he brought it to life. I wanted to include all of my dawgs who been with me from the start and have had a major impact on the album. Whether you were featured, or just contributed energy in the creating process. Making sure everyone was included was my main priority. I gotta show the world how much flavor my squad REALLY has, we not just talking about it. So I had to display that to the world for their viewing pleasure.

What was the process like creating this track? The production is sick! Tell us more.

It's one of those tracks that "just happened." We were having a typical night in the yo [Editor's Note: that means "studio" for those untrained in cool] listening to beats. Coolin. Soon as GTonTheTrac played the FOBN beat, the session turned up! That led to boys freestyling, creating and coming up with waves. I was on a serious grind at the time (and still am). That energy, combined with the track had me on an "I need more out of life" type of mentality. That's where the FOBN album title came from. At that time, I didn't have a title. I've always said I'd let it come to me and it did. RadioBeatz added his flavor to the record and the rest is history.

What are your goals for your music career this year? What else can we expect from you in terms of singles, performances, videos, etc?

At the moment, my main focus is FOBN. I have a couple visuals in store for that project that we're gonna push as far as we can. Once we perfect the album you can expect it. As far as singles, I'll drop some teasers and see what type of reaction they get, and decide from there. I like to let the wave come to me ha, and from there, the shows and features will come.

Any collaborations with other artists or producers in the works for you?

I'm always working with RadioBeatz & GTonTheTrac. We're a team with it so we definitely get A LOT of work in. I've got a lot of tracks from my dawg Stew and these dope producers called 7th Universe. We definitely got some heat on deck. As far as other artists I've really been focusing on my team. Chuck Wag, UflyLA, Perf P and Stew, who've been doing his thing for a long time now and gotta couple projects that I'm featured on. I have relationships with a few people that I politic with. Who knows what the future will bring, ha!

When can we expect to see the video released?

No exact date at the moment. I have a few trips planned and who knows, there could be a surprise release. Just gotta stayed tuned. We're putting the final touches on the album now and restructuring a few of the songs to get them exactly how we want them. It's coming really, really soon though. I think the cool thing to say is "Just Wait On It".

What else should we know?

FOBN is a formulated process. Very detailed. Man, so many hours have been invested in this, the people will definitely be able to tell. A lot of folks gon' be surprised to be honest. A lot of folks gon' be appreciative. A lot of folks gon' hate. Haha, it's the circle of life. Im ready for it. It's titled FOBN for a reason. Like Gotti said, these days "errrbody rich", so I'ma be the guy who's not afraid to admit that in the grand scheme of things, Im still broke! There's A LOT more I want out of life and I'm here to obtain it.
